In efforts to give back to the community, Asia Metropolitan College Kota Kinabalu (AsiaMetKK) carried out several activities throughout 2018 with the community in surrounding areas. One of the main activities held was the Free Health Screening programme for Secondary School Students. AsiaMetKK visited selected secondary schools around Kota Kinabalu to conduct ‘Free Health Screening’.
Over 1,000 students went through the screening process including Body Mass Index (BMI), Blood Pressure (BP) Test and ABO Blood Grouping. This effort sought to educate students on the importance of monitoring their health amidst busy schedules and to start living healthy. Many students benefited from this programme and were encouraged to have a balanced lifestyle.
The second event was providing sponsorship for fire victims of SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Penampang. Staff of AsiaMetKK, Richard Austin Spiji and Jane Laimun visited SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin. The duo represented the college in handing over the institution’s sponsorship of 250 pairs of new shoes for students affected by the recent fire that gutted their 2-storey hostel. The sponsorship was received by the school principal, Puan Hajah Nurani @ Fauziah Binti Derin and school counselor, Encik Fadley. They thanked Asia Metropolitan College Kota Kinabalu for its generosity and for being the 1st higher learning institution to provide aid for affected students.
In the spirit of caring and sharing, a group of student volunteers from the Diploma in Nursing programme organized a charity visit to Rumah Harapan Bakti in Inanam. Rumah Harapan Bakti provides shelter for orphanages, individuals with Down Syndrome and children with disabilities. Among activities carried out during the visit were talent time, art and craft and mini-games. The community at Rumah Harapan Bakti had a great time displaying their creativity and skills while learning new things from students as well. The entire visit concluded with a fellowship meal.
Community projects like these are organized to create opportunities for students to make a positive impact on our campus and community. It also helps students gain leadership skills, build relationships with fellow students and the community while gaining experience in their field of interest.
